Whether you’re at work, at school, or at home, here are several stress management relaxation techniques that you might want to try:

Breathing. This is probably the simplest relaxation technique there is. Simply taking several deep breaths can help you experience a reduction of stress and tension. Try to sit upright or lie down on your back, then inhale through your nose. Feel your abdomen expand, then contract as you exhale slowly.

Listen to music. Scientific studies have found that music, especially classical tunes, can calm the mind and body systems and reduce stress. You can listen to music while you’re on the job, while you’re in commute, or while you’re having your meals. And it doesn’t matter where you are during the day - all you need to do is whip out your iPod and jam the excess stress away.

Try meditation. You can try to meditate by simply sitting upright in a dark, quiet place, and trying to avoid any sensory input. You simply sit and breathe in and out slowly, focusing all your attention to the breath. This is obviously difficult for many people, and it might not be the best relaxation technique for everyone (since, if you’re not used to silence, it could very well drive you crazy). But those who have experienced the peace and well-being from a few minutes of quiet meditation knows its penetrating benefits.

Get some exercise. Many individuals know of the great stress-busting benefits of a good workout at the gym. Other people choose to incorporate exercise in their lives by taking regular walks, doing household chores, and playing sports. Older individuals may opt for exercise routines that are easier on the bones and joints, such as Tai Chi and Yoga. And many, many people think it’s a great idea to wrap up the day’s workout with a massage, as it reduces tension in both the body and mind.

Rely on social support. Simply talking about your problems with a trusted friend and listening to their own can open the doors to solutions. Throw a small party and laugh the stress off with your social support group, whoever they may be. You could also keep a journal or blog about your experiences, perhaps even creating a social support group over the Internet.

Take a vacation. At least every week, schedule a guilt-free day off when you could hang out with friends or family and just basically do whatever you want. Great ways to beat stress during your day off can include playing with your pets, going to the spa, or simply losing yourself in a good book. Taking your mind off from the worries of everyday life can give your mind a break from the regular tension, and leaves it better prepared to face the challenges of the following days.

Make a few healthy changes. In life, make only enough commitments that you can handle. Having too much can bog you down and leave you susceptible to illness. Make sure you eat well and regularly, get some exercise, and sleep well every night. This will keep your body at peak condition and better able to manage stress.

Finally, a change in attitude can be a wise move to make. Many of us are perfectionists, and as such often subject ourselves to more tension and disappointments than we “normally” should. Others look at all kinds of stress as a negative thing, and often have trouble getting along with life, work, and relationships. We can start by looking at challenges as obstacles that can be overcome; ones that would leave us stronger when we do. This mindset, applicable to even the most mundane chores (taking out the trash, for instance), can play a significant role in limiting the amount of stress we have to cope with.

Having a good “release valve” can help you live life with less stress holding you back. The Teenage Twilight Zone

I was shocked to learn recently that nearly all of my daughter’s friends are on bad terms with their parents. Out of a collection of around twenty teenagers, only two were happy to spend time with their parents, most preferring to avoid family interaction altogether.

This is a sad indictment of the parents, in my view. Teenagers by definition are self centred, aggravating creatures with inbuilt radar for avoiding household chores and a mysterious ability to disrupt the family home from the cellar to the attic for most of the interim years between the age of 12 and 19. This, however, is not a good enough reason to give up on them.

I learned early in my daughter’s teens that, in spite of being completely unable to keep her room even moderately clean and tidy, she had a reputation amongst other families for being an organised washer of dishes, an unstoppable whiz with a vacuum cleaner, and an asset in the kitchen. At first, I thought they must be talking about someone else’s child, but no. It really was my little horror they were talking about.

Why is it that these kids can perform so beautifully in another environment but not at home? I could quite truthfully swear that my daughter has never been bullied into doing anything she did not want to do, so the Cinderella theory is out the door.

Perhaps she just likes these other people better, you say to yourself, hoping it is not the case, of course. In actual fact, that has nothing to do with it. I believe now that it is only a case of wishing to achieve somewhere that is unfamiliar, with someone who is unaware that, at home your room resembles the Somme.

There is an element of make believe in the matter, I must add. These kids do not see themselves as a problem; they see themselves still as your little girl, your best buddy, almost as though they imagine such things as being responsible and careful with pocket money, keeping your room clean, helping with the chores, all apply to someone else. Threats to punish all these insurrections only lead to a greater problem, I discovered; conflict and resentment sparking a deeper unhappiness not worth the sacrifice of getting the floors vacuumed or the windows cleaned.

Another very curious feature of teenage behaviour is that children who have been raised from a very early age to be helpful and responsible, polite and supportive, will go off the tracks as quickly as a child who has been ruined rotten and never taught any standards whatever! Most unfair – it makes you wonder why you bothered!

My experiences have mostly been of girls but I have been assured by friends that their boys are just as worrying, turning laconic, lazy and sullen.

It is true, though, that at some stage in their early twenties, these kids reform. The reformation is as mysterious as the departure from authority in the first place; it just happens, rather like Santa Clause. Just be grateful and try not to analyse things too closely. They all come home in the end – you just have to be patient until they do.

Some aspects of parenting are relatively easy, while others present us with more of a challenge. One area which often causes parents some difficulty is that of discipline and, in particular, teenage discipline.

As adults we are familiar with the concept of punishment and accept that poor performance or bad behavior frequently results in our being punished. If you don’t study for your professional examination then your poor performance in your exam is punished by awarding you a low score. If you don’t perform well at work you’re punished with delayed promotion or the withholding of an anticipated pay rise. If you’re found drunk and disorderly in a public place you’ll probably be punished by spending a night in a police cell and receiving a fine from the local court.

In simple terms, punishment is nothing more than one side of the justice equation and the purpose of justice is to carefully weight the facts of a case and then to render a fair judgment and, where necessary, to hand down an appropriate punishment.

Just as we have learnt through our own experience that every action has consequences and that these can sometimes be unpleasant or painful, our children also need to learn this lesson. But teaching them this lesson is not always easy and this is especially true when it comes to dealing with teenagers.

Before you can attempt to handle this thorny problem you have to realize that it will take considerably objectivity on your part, as well as a good sense of proportion. Just as our courts have to make an effort to separate out fact from fiction to get to the truth and then respond appropriately, so we as parents have to operate in much the same fashion when it comes to disciplining our children.

Let’s look at an example.

Your sixteen year old son comes home later than agreed having spent the evening with friends and this sparks a heated argument in the lounge which ends in your son announcing that he’s going to get himself something to eat. A moment later you hear a loud crash coming from the kitchen and entering the room you find a broken platter and the leftover turkey spread across the kitchen floor and your son banging his fist on the kitchen counter and swearing loudly. How should you react?

The problem here is that you didn’t actually see what happened and there are several possible explanations for the scene in front of you. However, you and your son are already angry with each other and your natural reaction is to respond based on that fact.

On the one hand, it is possible that your son took the platter out of the fridge and, in an expression of his anger, deliberately smashed it on the floor. On the other hand, it is possible that, because he was distracted by your recent argument and wasn’t paying attention to what he was doing, the platter slipped out of his hand as he was taking it from the refrigerator. It is also possible that, as he was setting the platter down on the counter, he accidentally brushed his arm up against the hot kettle, which you had boiled just a few minutes earlier to make yourself a cup of coffee, and that the platter had been knocked to the floor when he instinctively pulled away from the kettle.

The danger is that if don’t establish just what happened before you react you may well take the wrong action and make an already difficult situation even worse. The secret is to remain objective, discover exactly what happened and then act appropriately. So, start by taking a deep breath and a moment to compose yourself and then simply ask your son calmly and quietly what happened.

Let’s look at two possible scenarios.

The first is that your son brushed against the hot kettle. Here an appropriate response might be to make sure that he hasn’t injured himself requiring medical treatment, to help him clear up the mess and get something to eat and then allow him to go to bed. This will calm the situation and give both of you a bit of breathing space allowing you to sort out the problem which sparked the original argument the following day when you’ve both had time to consider the situation.

The second is that your son deliberately threw the platter on the floor. Now tempers are already high and you’re certainly not going to get anywhere by pouring more fuel on the fire. Possibly the best answer here is to tell your son, again quietly and calmly, to clear up the mess and go to bed and then to leave the kitchen before he has a chance to respond and start the argument up again.

At this point he may or may not clear up the mess and a common trap to fall into is that of focusing you attention on this as the main issue. It would be all too easy at this point to turn the mess in the kitchen into a battleground and to make a stand in order to assert your authority. The broken platter is not however the main issue and, at this point, it’s not really important whether he clears up the mess or not. If he does then that’s fine but, if he doesn’t, then simply wait for him to go to bed and clear up the mess yourself. The following morning when you’ve both calmed down and had a chance to sleep on things you can then deal with both the original argument and the broken platter.

By remaining object and taking the time to both find out exactly what has happened and to consider an appropriate response your son will benefit in two ways. First, he will receive a punishment that is appropriate to the action he has taken and second he will learn that it is possible to deal with situations maturely and with self-control even when emotions are running high.

It was many years ago. The boy was not more than ten years old as he stood beside the man that early morning. They were both standing on the shore of the Atlantic looking east toward the rising sun. The chill morning air caused a slight shiver to run through the boy. The man, seeming to know without even looking, took off his jacket and draped it over the small shoulders of his son. They walked up to the water’s edge as the man spoke: “You see that wide expanse of water? It is made of billions of gallons, and each gallon is made of tens of thousands of drops.”

The little boy seemed curious. “And what are the drops made of?” he asked.

With a smile, the man replied: “The drops are made of smaller and smaller drops, and each in turn is made of bits and pieces of things that make the very world we live in.”

“What am I made of, Dad?” the boy asked after a short while. “Am I made of the same stuff as the ocean?”

The father smiled as he replied: “Everything is made of everything else, and everything is a part of other things. As you stand here this morning, you are a part of this land, this shore, this ocean. Look at that tree, the sky. They are parts of the very me and the eternal “I”. There is a force that keeps us together. Some call that force God, others, Allah, Jehovah, or Jove. There are a thousand names for this force, but it doesn’t matter what it’s called. It just is. As you grow older and wiser, you will find the stirring of this mighty force within you. You will know that it’s always there, and that you’re safe and happy within it.”

The boy, with a puzzled expression, looked at his father and asked: “How can this force, this God, be within me and at the same time be in everything else I see?”

“Because,” the man replied, “God is in everything and everyone. God is in you and in me, in those gulls you see over there, in the sand under our feet and the lilies of the field. God is everywhere and everything, and there cannot be two everything. God is a part of you just like the drop of water is a part of this ocean. Remember this well and you will grow up to have a sense of peace, joy and understanding.”

Decades have passed since I stood on that shore with my father. I have since traveled to many countries, lived in various cultures, and experienced deep sorrow and great joy. I have seen the best and the worst of my fellow human beings, Yet, through it all, I could hear the voice of my father telling me: “God is everywhere and everything, and there cannot be two everything.”

As a young boy, I grew up in a small village of Hindus, Christians, Moslems and others. I learned at a very early age that all people are shipmates on the common voyage of life and that one cannot sink one’s shipmates without sinking oneself. As I studied the Vedic writings and compared them with the words of the Hebrew prophets and the teachings of the New Testament Apostles, I found that the common thread running through them all was love. The greatest commandment ever given was “Love your God and love one another” - all others are simply variations on that theme.

The word “Karma,” is a word everyone knows, but what does it actually mean?

Karma is simply something that exists within us, which moves us all and is made up of events that have happened, or will happen to us. How can things that happened to us make Karma?

Here it is important to understand that anything we did is effectively saved in our consciousness and reappears. We save everything we do in our consciousness; this is the fundamental point to keep in mind when considering Karma.

This consciousness works as a spirit and when the spirit comes to the time of death it detaches itself becoming independent and separates from the body.

When this consciousness which was in the spirit disappears, it will be reborn again. Just because consciousness has disappeared, does not mean things that happened in the past will disappear altogether.

When consciousness disappears, everything that happened to us will remain latent and reappear; these things that are latent in all of us will continuously cause a reaction and influence our life and being.

Karma is always there and influences our lives - This is the essence of Karma.

To understand Karma fully, we need to understand the concept of reincarnation.

Reincarnation simply means that everything is repeated. Something which exists continuously therefore leads to repetition.

Past, present and future are therefore interwoven. Our lives are influenced by this law and every creature on the earth is born and then dies and is reborn.

If we were born into the world and we die we don’t disappear we continue to exist and effectively reappear, something is saved in our consciousness that does not disappear but continuously remains.

Therefore, what happened to you in present your past life will influence your future life. This is referred to as the Law of Cause and Effect.

Karma will exist in you by cause and effect. As long as this Karma exists a person will never be free from the control of Karma and its influence.

Karma is not a fate, we all act with free will and create his own destiny. According to the Hinduism, if we sow good in our lives we will reap good; if we sow evil we will reap evil.

Karma refers to the totality of our actions in our present and previous lives and these actions effectivley determine our future.

The conquest of karma relies on intelligent action and dispassionate reaction.

Not all karmas rebounds straight away against individuals, some accumulate and return unexpectedly in our present, or future lives.

Karma is considered entirely impersonal and should not be seen as a punishment or retribution, but an extended expression of natural acts.

The effects experienced, can to be mitigated by actions and are not necessarily fateful, but are influenced by positive action.

The Consequences of Karma

For every action you take as we have seen there will be a reaction in the future. This is the law of Karma.

Whatever activity we do, good or bad, will bring us good or bad reactions. For every action you take, you will face a reaction in the future, in your next incarnation.

If you perform good actions, you will face good reactions in the future; if you perform bad actions they will see you face bad actions.

This may come in many different forms:

If you take good actions you may benefit in terms of, good health, wealth, personal fulfillment etc.

If you take bad actions, you will face bad reactions in the future. The bad reactions may come in the form of ill health, poverty. Personal unfullfilement etc

When we suffer in our present life, we are facing the consequences of the bad reactions to our bad actions we took in the past.

Our actions include everything we do in our lives, including our physical deeds, words and thoughts. There will be a reaction to all of these, that is the law of Karma.

Actions, which can result in bad Karma, are: Violence, ignorance, cruelty, untruthfulness, greed etc

Actions, which build good Karma, are the opposite: non-violence, generosity, charity, self-control, truthfulness, simplicity, forgiveness and an absence of ego.

Our destiny is effectively in our own hands and we are all held responsible for all your actions.

The reason why some good people suffer all their life is, they maybe good now, but they are suffering because they are facing the consequences of the actions they took in their previous lives. As they are now taking good actions they will face good reactions, in their next life.

On the other hand, the reason why some really bad people enjoy a good life despite being bad can be explained by the fact they are now facing the good reactions to the good actions they took in previous lives.

However, because they are taking bad actions now, they will face bad reactions in the future and suffer. As a consequence if a person takes good actions in life and builds good karma, he or she will be born into a better life in the next incarnation.

A person is born again and again and faces the consequences of his or her own actions.

Karma and Our Law and Order Systems.

Why do we have the police, judges, courts and jails? We have a system of law and order in each and every country, which makes us responsible for our actions, if not we face the consequences of our actions under the law.

Without Law and Order systems, life would be reduced to anarchy. People could kill, loot, steal, rape and destroy property and people, would not be held responsible for their actions.

We have the human Law and Order System in every country and the citizens of each country are held responsible for the actions they take and those who break the law are punished.

Just as we have the Human Law and Order system in countries, God has a Law, the Law of Karma.

We are held responsible for all our actions under this law, the differences between the human system and God’s system are:

With Karma, we are responsible for all our actions, including words and thoughts and we cannot escape punishment.

With Karma, there is no escape we don’t need to be caught by the police, we will face reactions to each and every action we take in the future, With the normal law and order system some people do get away with murder and other crimes, but they don’t with karma, everything is noted and has a consequence.

We Cannot Escape Karma!

With Karma, we are punished for our bad actions in future lives for the actions we have taken in past lives and we are rewarded

for good actions that we take:

As the old saying goes:

“What goes around comes around”

This is the principle that underlines Karma.
